Detail Description

Discourses on the weekly Torah readings by R. Jacob ben Solomon Rakah. The detailed title-page begins with paragraphs in which the initial words of four of the first five paragraphs are Kol, the fourth being Rakah and the final words are Ya’akov. The text of the title-page begins “‘the voice of rejoicing’ (Psalms 118:15)) of Torah’ . . . sought out by all who love them’ (Psalms 11:2)” It is dated with the verse “the Lord is my strength and song” (Exodus 15:2). The title-page is followed by approbations from R. Raphael Meir Panziel, R. Jacob Saul Elishar, of Jerusalem, R. Joseph David Abulaphia, R. Menasha Arzei ha-Kohen, R. David Jacob Vaknin, R. Habib Hayyin David Sathom, R. David Nathaniel Rofed, R. Isaac Abraham Bakira, and R. Rahamim Abulaphia of Tiberia, and from R. Jacob Maimon. R. Abraham Hayyim Adadi, and R. Hayyim Rabba, and then an introduction by Elijah ben Amuzag the printer. The discourses comprising the text are of varying length but not overly long, based on an extensive use of early sources, among them many rishonim.

R. Jacob ben Solomon Rakah (1800-1891) was born in Tripoli to a distinguished family. He choose not to accept the title or position of rav or dayyin, choosing instead to lead a simple humble life. He was a prolific author, writing distinguished works, among them on the Rambam.
