Detail Description

First edition of this unusual kabbalistic work on shehitah by R. Eliezer ha-Levi of Zhitomir. The first of two title pages describes it as Pirkei ha-Ne’ezar on hilkhot shehitot ve-bedikot in the manner of Pardes, that is, peshat, remez, derash, and sod (pardes, literal, allusive, discursive, and esoteric interpretations), in four parts. The second, more detailed title page describes R. Eliezer ha-Levi of Zhitomir as a Talmud of R. Zeev Wolf of Zhitomir, author of Or Me’ir. This holy work is entirely full of the fear of heaven according to the manner of his teacher, to stir the hearts of the children of Israel to love the Creator and serve him in truth according to Or Me’ir. I t was brought to press by R. Meir Friedman. There are approbations from R. Mordecai ben Menahem Nahum Twersky of Tschernoble, R. Abraham Dov Auerbach, R. Mordecai Dov Twersky, and R. Baruch Asher ben Aaron Twersky. There are two introductions on hilkhot shehitah and hilkhot trefus, and then the text, in two columns in rabbinic letters. Pirkei ha-Ne’ezar is in four parts, encompassing hilkhot shehitah, hilkhot trefus, hilkhot bedikot ha-reiah, and other related issues.

R. Zeev Wolf of Zhitomir (d. 1800), upon whose teaching this work is based, was a hasidic preacher and a disciple of R. Dov Baer, the Maggid of Mezhirech. His book, Or ha-Me'ir (Korets, 1787), is important for its wealth of material on the history of Hasidism and teachings of its founders. R. Ze'ev criticized the behavior of the zaddikim of his day who had abandoned simple living for luxury. An opponent of noisy prayer, he contended that one should pray with kavvanah, with the object of elevating one's thoughts and realizing one's insignificance: "One ought to pray with fear and reverence and stand upright and not be heard, and only move the lips" (Or ha-Me'ir, Terumah).
