First edition of the Bible in Hebrew and Spanish

Detail Description

The text with cantillation and pronunciation symbols, Hebrew and Spanish in parellel columns. First edition of the Bible in Hebrew and Spanish, although the Bible had been published regularly in Spanish ever since the famous Ferara Bible of 1553, the present volume heralds the first apperance of both languages in one volume. Abraham Mendes Castro of Curacao, Dutch West Indies was the promoter and indeed financier of this work.

Castro was the originator of the two languages to be published in the same volume as there was an insuffien number of Bibles in either language to fill the needs of pupils in Curaco. He pledged the funds of the proceeds of the sale of this Bible to the Jews of Jerusalem and Hebron. Thus this is the first Bible financed and printed by American Jews for the use of American Jewry.
