Detail Description

Letter by R. Joseph Isaacsohn (1815 – 1885) received his Talmudic education and ordination from R. Solomon Michel Struk. His first mariage was to the granddaughter of R. Akiva Eiger, Rivka Kalisher, his second marriage made him the son in law of the Arukh la-Ner, R. Jacob Ettlinger. R. Isaacsohn was appointed Chief Rabbi of Rotterdam in 1850. He put an end to the trend towards reform, and also introduced order and decorum in the synagogue. He was criticized for his failure to learn the Dutch language and for many of his rabbinical decisions, and left his post in 1870. He was member of the orthodox college together with two other Chief Rabbis, who gave an precedent by rejecting the installation of a by them said Reform rabbi Dr. Jacob Frankel, which decision was overruled by the Dutch minister.
