Detail Description

Only edition of this arrangement of text to be learned during the period of mourning by R. Jacob ben David Pardo. The title, fittingly, is from “He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters (me menuhot). He restores my soul; he leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me” (Psalms 23:2-4). The title page states that there is no water but Torah. Me Menuhot begins with a prayer to be said before learning during the seven days of mourning for a person. The actual text has as the first entry readings from Genesis “And when Jacob finished commanding his sons, he gathered up his feet into the bed, and expired, and was gathered unto his people” Genesis 49-33) through Genesis 50:13, followed by a reading from Leviticus and then readings from various tractates and from the Zohar. There are separate readings for the completion of the sheloshim (thirty day period of mourning) and for women.

Rabbi at Ragusa and Spalato in the eighteenth century. He was the author of: "Marpe Lashon" (Venice, 1780), prayers and religious poems for children, printed conjointly with his "Tehillah be-Ereẓ," poems on the earthquake in Ragusa; "Ḳehillat Ya'aḳob" (ib. 1784), commentary on the Earlier Prophets; "Toḳfo shel Nes" (ib. 1789), introduction to the "Ma'aseh Nissim" of Aaron Cohen Ragusano; "Appe Zuṭre" (ib. 1797), novellæ to the treatise "Hilkot Ishshut," i.e., precepts for women; "Minḥat Aharon" (ib. 1809), precepts for the religious ritual upon awakening, for the three daily prayers, and moral precepts; "Mishkenot Ya'aḳob" (Leghorn, 1824), commentary on Isaiah, published by his son David Samuel.
