Detailed Description:   

One of the primary works on Hoshen Mishpat by R. Mordecai Simeon ben Nissim Solomon. This volume, part three of Matteh Shimon, covers chapters 227 through 258 of H. M. followed by Mera Dakhya, forty responsa. The title page has a border of three rows of florets and a text in which the initial words horizontally say matteh tov is his name . . . and verticallty form an acrostic of the title. It is dated, “And you shall take this rod in your hand המטה הזה תקח (5579 = 1819)” (Exodus 4:17). There are several approbations and and an introduction from R. Jacob Menasha who brought the book to press. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type.

R. Mordecai Simeon ben Nissim (d. 1814?) belonged to the renowned Bekemoharar family of Adrianople which produced many important rabbis. R. Mordecai Simeon, who traveled extensively between the communities in Turkey and the Balkans, also served as rabbi and was a halakhist of repute. His father was R. Mordecai Nissim (a name added later) Solomon bem Mordecai (1732?–1770?) author of Heshek Shelomo (Constantinople, 1768) on the first 68 chapters of Hoshen Mishpat, Mikhtav Shelomo, responsa (vol. 1, Salonika, 1855; vol. 2, appended to his father's Ma'amar Mordekhai), and Beit Shelomo, only a small part published in his grandson Menahem (IV)'s Devar Emet.
