Detail Description

First edition of this important and comprehensive commentary on and defense of the Rambam’s Sefer ha-Mitzvot by R. Aryeh Leib Zitl Segal Horowitz. The title-page with an attractive if unusual pressmark, states that it is the Sefer ha-Mitzvot of the Nesher ha-Gadol (Rambam) with the commentary Marganita Tava. The book was brought to press by the author’s son Zevi Hirsch Zitl Segal and his partner Menahem Manish  Margolious. There are approbations from R. Jacob Yosha of Cracow, his son R. Nathan av bet din of Abramil, R. Saul ben Aryeh Leib Lowenstat, and R. Isaac Hayyim ibn Dana di Brito. The text is comprised of the Sefer ha-Mitzvot in square letters encompassed by the extensive commentary of Marganita Tava in rabbinic letters. R. Moses ben Nachman (Ramban) was critical of several aspects of Maimonides’ (Moses ben Maimon, Rambam) Sefer ha-Mitzvot. In Marganita Tava R. Segal Horowitz both explains and defends Maimonides.

R. Aryeh Leib Zitl Segal Horowitz was a Lithuanian Talmudist of the seventeenth century. After having been rosh yeshivah in several German towns R. Horwitz was called in a similar capacity to the yeshivah of Minsk while R. Jehiel Heilprin was chief rabbi there. R. Horwitz was the author of "Margenita Ṭaba," a defense of Maimonides' "Sefer ha-Miẓwot" against the strictures of Naḥmanides, published with the "Sefer ha-Miẓwot" at Frankfort-on-the-Main, 1756. According to the preface, added by his son, R. Horwitz wrote also novellæ on the Talmud, and Elef ha Magen, defending Maimonides against the attacks of R. Abraham ben David.
