Detail Description

Responsa and novellae by R. Samuel ben Elḳanah. The title-page of Mekom Shemu’el has an elegant frame with depictions of Moses and Aaron on the sides and King David at the top. The title-page is followed by several approbations, verse by R. Sender, then two pages of Shir by the author in an unusual design comprised of the R. Samuel’s name in the center and the verse extending out like spokes from a wheel or rays of the sun, then additional verse formed from an anagram, an introduction the author, and then the text. Mekom Shemu’el was edited by R. Ashkenazi’s brother R. Pesah. The text is comprised of one hundred two responsa on all four parts of  the Tur encompassing such varied subjects as Matzah and a letter of excommunication (no. 99). Many of the responsa were written by R. Ashkenazi to his brother or to his son. The responsa are followed by Hiddushei dinnim and then novella on tractates. At the end is an index of the responsa, erratica, and an apologia of the editor.
