Only edition of this ethical work by R. Boaz Raphael ben Solomon Zalman Rot Shilt. The title is from, “the way of a ship in the midst of the sea” (Proverbs 30:19). The title page describes it as part one, but there is no evidence that any other part was ever printed. The text states that it is on the thirteen Middot and thirteen principles to a few in the mishmar and the foundations of faith. “And to man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 29:28). And giving “good judgment and knowledge” (Psalms 119:66) to the Rambam, Itturim, Hovot ha-Lavvovot, Ibn Ezra, and Kuzari, which address these subjects. Written by the dayyan, R. Boaz Raphael Rot Shilt from Ittengin, who was previously dayyan and served as rabbi in Palheim. It is dated with the verse, “and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and return, and be healed” (Isaiah 7:10). There are two pages of approbations from R. Joseph Stein Hart, R. Abraham Benjamin Wolff ben Samuel ha-Levi, and R. Isaac Kahana Rappaport. Next are is verse in two columns, the first with the heading, dispute between the body and the soul, the soul says. The second column is the response of the discerning soul. The initial letters are alphabetic, that is each lines begins in the order of the alphabet, the initial letters of the last lines forming an acrostic. Below are brief prefatory remarks from the editor. There is an introductory apologia from the author, and then the text in two columns in rabbinic type. Oni be-Lev Yam is divided into sha’arim that is, Sha’ar Binyamin, Sha’ar Shelomo, Sha’ar Ahdus, Sha’ar ha-Rahamim, Sha’ar ha-Teshuvah, Sha’ar ha-Emet, Sha’ar ha-Avot, Sha’ar ha-Yedis’ah, and Sha’ar ha-Tehiyah.
