Detail Description

Only edition of these halakhic novellae on the Shulhan Arukh and tractates by R. Hayyim ben Menahem Algazi (d. c. 1710). The detailed title-page describes Benei Hayai (Sons of My Life) as halakhic novellae on the order of the Arba’ah Turim and the Keneset ha-Gedolah of R. Hayyim Beneviste. There is a brief introduction concluding with verse and a second introduction by his student who edited Benei Hayai, R. Meir Da’anon, followed by the text, which, as stated on the title-page, follows the order of the Tur. Throughout Benei Hayai are annotations and novellae from R. Hayyim Alfandari. The final section of the volume are novellae on tractates Shevu’ot, Sanhedrin, Gittin, and the Rambam. This part was edited by R. edited by Hayyim ben Isaac Raphael Alfandari.Also included in the text are responsa from R. Elijah ha-Levi who forbids reading from printed Humashim and praying from prayer-books printed by non-Jews (62b-63a) and from R. Jacob ibn Purna who permits it. Benei Hayai was actually printed in Orthokoi in the vicinity of Constantinople.

R. Hayyim ben Menahem Algazi (d. c. 1710) of Izmir was a nephew of R. Jacob Alfandari. He served as Rav in Rhodes and in his last years returned to Izmir.

הספר מסודר כסדר "כנסת הגדולה" של ר' חיים בנבנשתי. הגהותיו וחידושיו של ר' חיים אלפאנדארי מפוזרות בספר ובראשם צורת כף-היד. בראש הספר הקדמת המעתיק, ר' מאיר דאנון. דף קף-קצא: "לשונות מפוזרים ... לדבר הלכה והגדה" (לקוטים). טז;יט דף: חדושי שבועות, סנהדרין גיטין ולשונות הרמב"ם. דף סב,ב-סג,א: תשובת ר' אליה הלוי הפוסק שאסור "לקרוא בחומשי' מודפסים ולהתפלל בסדורי תפילו' יען שהם מודפסים מהגוים", בצידה תשובת המגיה, ר' יעקב ן' פורנה המצדד להתיר. דף קעה,א-קעט,ב: "הגהות שמצאתי בכתבי מהר"ח [ר' חיים] בנבנשתי [בעל כנסת הגדולה, על סי' תך-תכא מחושן משפט]".
