Detail Description
Attractive and rare pseudo-edition of tractate Sanhedrin attributed to Basle, but the actual place of printing is indeterminate but Feurth has been suggested as the actual place of printing. The title-page is ornate, depicting Moses to the left, Aaron to the right, with smaller depictions of Solomon (left) and David playing a harp (right) above. Below are small insets, from left to right, of Isaac blessing Jacob, the Akeda (sacrifice of Isaac), and Jacob's ladder with angels ascending and descending. There is also an ornate tail-piece at the end of the volume. The Talmud was banned by the Catholic Church during the counter-reformation in the mid-sixteenth century and when it was first permitted to reprint the Talmud it was only as a highly censored edition in Basle (1578-81). Subsequently, other locations that printed the Talmud had to do so in conformity with the censored Basle edition, although some later editions that claimed to do so had some deleted material replaced. This edition of tractate Sanhedrin clearly has had censored and deleted material added. This is obvious not only because such material can be found but because within the volume there are several locations in both the text, Rashi, and Tosafot that later censors inked out.
