Only edition of this discourse between a pious Jew and a maskil by R. Rafael ben Ze’ev ha-Kohen (Pele ben Zeʼev). The title-page describes Hut ha-Meshulash as a debate between a religious Jew and a misnagid and maskil (free thinker), in order to clarify custom and faith. In conjunction with this are responsa on such subjects as smoking, riding on a train on Shabbos, hadash (new produce), and yayin neskh (idolatrous wine) in contemporary times, all based on the Talmud and later sages. Below the description of the contents is the verse “These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to one another, render true and perfect justice in your gates" (Zechariah 8:16) indicative of the author’s integrity in expressing his arguments. There is an preface and an introduction form the author and then the text which is presented as a conversation, The last part of Hut ha-Meshulash are listed as related teshuvot.
