Detail Description
Stuart was born in Wilton, CT, in 1780. He studied at Yale and served as a Congregationalist pastor in New Haven. He became Professor of Sacred Literature at Andover Theological Seminary in 1810, though
he "then knew hardly more than the elements of Hebrew". Stuart required all students entering the ministry to possess a reading proficiency of Hebrew and he trained Protestant ministers to translate the Bible into Asian and African languages. Many of the fifteen
hundred students that he taught during his forty-year career themselves became teachers of Hebrew in other schools, and he may thus be credited with the revival of Hebrew in America. Among his students was Edward Robinson. He died in 1852.
