Detail Description

R. Zevi Hirsch ben Solomon Shapira (1850-1913) of Munkacs was born in Strzysov. He was known as a great scholar with an encyclopedic knowledge of rabbinics and mysticism. His youth was spent under the tutelage of his father and grandfather. His father put him in charge of the Munkacs bet din. He became rebbe in 1893. In addition to his responsibilities as rebbe R. Shapira also headed a yeshiva that produced many rabbis. His works include the Darkhei Teshuva on Yoreh De’ah in four parts (Vilna and Munkacs, 1892-1904), with a fifth part completed by his son (Szolyva, 1912), today a basic work for study of that part of the Shulhan Arukh; Tzvi Tiferet (Munkacs, 1912), responsa; and Be’er Le-Hai Roi (Munkacs/Beregszasz, 1903-21) on Tikkunei ha-Zohar.
