Detail Description

Kabbalistic liturgy for the entire year composed by R. Joseph Jedidiah ben Benjamin Jekuthiel Carmi (b. c. 1590), to be recited by the members of Shomerim la-Boker, those who arise early for special prayers. R. Carmi was raised in Modena, becoming an instructor there and, in 1623, hazzan for the Usiglio family in their private synagogue. His brother-in-law was R. Aaron Berechiah of Modena, whose Seder Ashmoret ha-Boker (Mantua, 1624) influenced R. Carmi to undertake his own liturgical work, that is, Kenaf Renanim. The title page has an architectural frame and states that

to him are "the wings of the morning" (Psalms 139:9). In the morning His face dwells in the clouds, "in the night; in the beginning of the watches" (Lamentations 2:19), with song, praise, and zemirot, "in measures of length, weight, and volume" (Leviticus 19:35) "And they shall be for signs, and for festivals" (Genesis 1:14), for Shabbat and for new months, "daily, every day" (var. cit.) to give to him His blessings.

The Hebrew date is  שפ"ז(387) and the Latin date is 1626, so that publication was in the final months of that year. The title is from "The wings of the ostrich (kenaf renanim) are a delight" (Job 39:13). R. Carmi's introduction follows, in which he informs that he entitled the book Kenaf Renanim because a person's purpose is to raise the wings of the morning with prayer, songs, and zemirot daily. There are approbations from prominent Italian rabbis from several cities. The text is in square vocalized letters accompanied by glosses from Carmi. The prayers encompass daily and festival services.

The publication of KenafRenanim was the subject of controversy, reflected in the approbations and letters printed with the book. After receiving rabbinic approval to publish the book, R. Carmi was charged by R. Berechiah with violating the sanctity of the established order of prayers and breaching the prohibition against composing new liturgical hymns. Furthermore, Berechiah wrote, concerning a viddui (confession) modeled after a kabbalistic prayer, "how dare a winged creature (i.e., an insect) place his head among those immersed in mysticism (Kabbalah):'  The dispute between the brothers-in-law, both residents of Modena, was submitted to the bet din of Modena. R. Nethanel Trabot, wrote concerning their favorable response, that Kenaf Renanim was "fit for use by the public, for it is worthy of a place in the highest circles:' R. Trabot, who never mentions Berechiah by name, instead alludes to him respectfully as a scholar who raises questions, calling upon the two parties to reconcile, which, as reported by Kenaf Renanim, did occur. After the original approbations is R.  Carmi's detailed response and additional letters in support of Kenaf Renanim.

After publication two additional leaves were added, one with further hymns, the other with errata. Copies with these leaves are extremely rare. This is the only edition of Kenaf Renanim. R. Carmi wrote responsa which are extant in manuscript.
