Detail Description

Manual on the tenets of Judaism by R. Isaak Schonbrunner (1797-1883), instructor at the Jewish school for boys (knabenlehrer an der Israeliischen Religionachule). The full title is Elementar=Untericht der Religion und Moral für die Israelitische, vaterländische Jugend (Elementary teaching of religion and morals for the Israelite, patriotic youth). The title-page adds Aus dem Franzofficen frei übersetzt, für Bayern bearbeiter, und mir erlauernden noten versehern, that it is freely translated from the with notes by  notes by R. Schonbrunner. The verso has a brief preface from Mendelsohn in Jerusalem, followed by the Vorwort (introduction). The text is divided into sections, beginning with questions. For example, the first section is Vorbereitung (preparation) questions such as Was heist ein Israelit? and the answer Ein Abkömmling des Patriarchen Abraham . . . that is a descenddnt of Abraham. Sections deal with such subjects as the Scriptures, festivities, and sin and repentance. An interesting and insightful work on Jewish education in German in the early nineteenth century.
