Detail Description
Two independent works of responsa, one of the geonim, the other of responsa by R. Mordecai Jafeh in one volume. The Teshuvot Geʼonim Kadmonim is the first edition of that important work, brought tp press from manuscripts by R. Joseph Tov Elim and prepared for publication by the noted (1818–1893), German educator and scholar David Cassel (1818-1893). Teshuvot Geʼonim Kadmonim has approbations from R. Jacob Joseph Ettinger, R. Elkanan Rosenstein, R. Jehiel Michael Zaks, and R. Aaron Fold. There is preliminary matter describing the geonim represented are in the volume, then the responsa. At the end is a title-page in German.The geonim were the heads of the academies of Sura and Pumbedita in Babylonia. The geonim were recognized by the Jewish community as the highest authority of instruction from the end of the sixth century or somewhat later to the middle of the 11. In the 10 and 11 centuries this title was also used by the heads of academies in Erez Israel. In the 12 and 13 centuries – after the geonic period in the exact sense of the term – the title gaon was also used by the heads of academies in Baghdad, Damascus, and Egypt.
The second work, Teshuvot R. M. Jafeh, that is, R. Mordecai Michael ben Menahem Mendel Jaffe of Hamburg. This is the only edition of these responsa. The title-page is followed by a preface from R. Jafeh and then the text. Teshuvot R. M. Jafeh is comprised of one-hundred twenty-three detailed responsa are on all four parts of the Shulhan Arukh. These two volumes are important halakhic works representing the responses of Jewish scholars to issues over a period on millennium.
