Detail Description

Comprehensive volume on Psalms with three commentaries, Rashi, R. David Altschuler’s Meẓudat David and Meẓudat Ẓiyyon the former elucidating the text, the latter explainin individual words. The third commentary is R. Eliezer Horowitz’s Amirot Tehorot . There is a second detailed title-page and then approbations from R. Jacob Orenstein, R. Solomon Zalman.. Aryeh Leib Lipshits, R. Meshullam Zalman, R. Aaron Moses, R. Israel Ashkenazi, and R. Zevi Hirsch. These are followed by introductions from R. Judah Leib Horowitz and from R. Eliezer Elimelech Horowitz, then additional approbations, and then the text in large vocalized square letters, accompanied by the commentaries in rabbinic letters. Amirot Tehorot. The lengthiest of the commentaries, reflects R. Horowitz’s wide ranging knowledge of halkhic literature, kabbalah, and mussar.

R. David Altschuler (18 century) was a Bible exegete. He lived in Jaworow, Galicia. In order to promote the study of the Bible, he planned an easy-to-read commentary on the Prophets and Hagiographa, based on earlier commentators. R. Altschuler's commentary on Psalms, Proverbs, and Job was published in Zolkiew in 1753–54. R. Jehiel Hillel (18 century), continued his father's work. He visited Jewish communities in Germany, Holland, and Italy. In 1770 he published in Berlin his father's commentary on the Latter Prophets, which he had completed (two vols.). Five years later his own work, Binyan ha-Bayit, appeared in Zolkiew.

R. Eliezer ben Jacob Ha-Levi Horowitz of Tarnograd (1740-1806)was was a disciple of R. Jehiel Michael of Zloczov, R. Elimelekh of Lejask, and R. Mordecai Meshulam Feivash of Zbaraz. He was also the author of Noam Maggidim u’oavod ha-Torah, that Amirot Tehorot. It was R. Horowitz’s belief that tzadikim are in a state of perpetual devoutness, soaring spiritually in the upper worlds and practicing devekut (devoutness) the entire week, whereas common people only achieve this state on Shabbat. The zaddik should utilize stories and legends to convey his message to his followers and to capture their heart.
