Detail Description

Only edition of these polemical responsa on the subject of Mikva’ot and Erev by R. Shalom Elkhanan ben Simeon Peretz ha-Levi Jaffe. The title page, printed in red and black letters, has the heading three books, and below the title, that it is kunteres eruv ve-Mikvaot and kunteres Mishpat le-Kav. It states that it is to negate the words of that sage who wrote critically concerning a made mikvah in America, wishing to invalidate a mikvah that he, R. Jaffe, had made. In this kunteres R. Jaffe shows that all his words are void and meaningless. R. Jaffe served as Rav in many communities in Russia and, at the time of publication, was Rav in Saint Louis in the United States. He was also the author of Peri Ashel, Tefillah Shelemah, and Sihah Shelamah. Accompanying R. Jaffe’s work is Ein Eliezer, glosses and pilpul, from R. Eliezer Zalman Grayevski of Jerusalem, author of Ginnat Egoz, Gevul, Yam, and Kaddish le-Olam. The title page is followed by several pages from rabbis in praise of the work, a vignette of the Western Wall, introductions from R. Jaffe and from R. Grayevski. The text follows in a single column in rabbinic type. Sho’el Ke-Inyan is on the top of the page, below it as glosses is Ein Eliezer. After the kuntres are responsa, addenda, Beit Tefilla, Takkanot Agunah, and Teshuvah ke-Halakha. Several vignettes of holy places in Erez Israel serve as tail-pieces.

R. Jaffe (c. 1858-1923) came to the United States in1889/90. He served as rabbi in New York prior to St. Louis, and was a head of the Union of Orthodox rabbis and was active on the Board of Orthodix rabbis of New York.
