Only edition of this multi-part work consisting of responsa, halakhic novellae on various subjects, among them on the Rambam and on prohibited foods by R. Elijah ben Moses Israel. The text of the title-page is comprised of five descriptive paragraphs, each beginning with the word Kol. The verso of the title-pages has an approbation signed by R. David Malach, R. Elijah ben Moses ha-Kohen, and R. Jacob ibn Naim, and below it an introduction from R. Moses Israel. This is followed by the author’s introduction, and at the bottom of the page is an attractive tail-piece with two cherubim. Next is the text, which encompasses responsa, arranged in the order of the four Ṭurim, and containing some responsa of his brother R. Abraham Israel and of his son, R. Moses Israel (Leghorn, 1792). Printed in two parts, fifteen years apart, both parts are present in this volume.
R. Elijah ben Moses Israel (d. 1786) was born in Jerusalem, and died in Alexandria Jan. 7, 1786. In 1763 he became rabbi of Rhodes, and was later offered the chief rabbinate of Alexandria. Though a prolific writer, few of his works have been published. Among these, in addition to Ḳol Eliyahu, are Kisse Eliyahu, glosses and novellæ on the Shulḥan Arukh, Oraḥ Ḥayyim, fragments of which appear at the end of R. Azulai's Va'ad la-Ḥakamim; Uggat Eliyahu, responsa (Leghorn, 1830); Shene Eliyahu, twenty-five homilies (ib. 1806); and Ar'a de-Yisrael, on the methodology of the Talmud, printed, together with Debar ha-Melek, a commentary on Maimonides, at the end of the Sha'ar Asher of Asher Covo (Vienna, 1821). Besides these R. Elijah left in manuscript eight other works on Talmudic-rabbinic literature.
