Important work on the laws of shemittah and their practical application by R. Abraham ben Solomon Alazarki. The book begins with an approbation from R. Jacob Saul Elyashar (1817-1906), Rishon le-Zion (Sephardi chief rabbi of Erez Israel) and an introduction by the editor, R. Isaac Badhab. The first part of the text is a pesak din from R. Elyashar concerning leniencies in the shemittah year. A second approbation appears on p. 20 from R. Raphael Meir Panigel (1804-93), chief rabbi of Jerusalem. The remainder of the book is on the laws of Shevi’it (Shemittah year). In the introduction R. Badhab informs that R. Alazarki, who is descended from R. Solomon Amarillo (1645-1721), named this work Shelom Yerushalayim because it numerical value (973 equals his name and the name of his father. Shemittah refers to the Sabbatical Year, when, according to the Bible, during the seventh year, all land has to be fallow and debts remitted (Ex. 23:10–11; Lev. 25:1–7, 18–22; Deut. 15:1–11).
