Detail Description

Only edition of these one-hundred-twelve responsa from R. Shabbetai Be’er. The title page refers to R. Shabbetai Be’er as an emissary of the Holy Land and is dated, “eternal right of redemption גאלת (434 = 1674)” (Leviticus 25:32). It is flowed by an introduction describing the virtues of the author ([2a-b]); trope of two souls, one called Hen Tov, the other Shem Tov ([3a-4b]) in two columns; and then the text, in a single column in small rabbinic type, excepting headers which are in large square letters. The volume concludes with an index of the responsa, errata, and a colophon in which R. Shabbetai Be’er writes that his duties as an emissary precluded his properly overseeing preparation of the book and the printers were not sufficiently expert to read his manuscript resulting in errors. Among the subjects addressed in Be’er Esek are (1) the order of the Mishnah; (4) on acquiring a house in the Venice ghetto; (29) the continued recitation of kinot over the destruction of the Temple after the advent of Shabbetai Zevi, noting that many hold the redemption is at hand. Be’er notes that the redemption has not yet actually occurred and quotes Maimonides description of Messianic times, which have not yet been fulfilled; (37) whether menstrual women should attend synagogue; (69) on the handling of money raised by emissaries; and (70) whether it is permissible to shave one’s beard, according to Kabbalah, apart from the pe’ot. R. Shabbetai Be’er informs that Fano and his students did shave their beards. Three responsa are stated to have been written while traveling as an emissary, although that may also be the case for others as well.<p>R. Shabbetai Be’er was born in Italy, the grandson and son-in-law of R. Menahem Azariah da Fano. He studied for twenty-two years under the kabbalist R. Isaac Berechiah Fano, subsequently settling in Jerusalem. R. Shabbetai Be’er returned to Italy as an emissary of Jerusalem, Safed, and Hebron, publishing Be’er Esek in Venice, passing before he could return to Erez Israel.
