Physical Description

Only edition. [5], 117; [1], 61 ff., folio, 328:222 mm., light age and damp staining, wide margins, old hands. A good copy bound in contemporary leather over boards, rubbed.

An important feature of this lot is three stamps in blue on the two title pages indicating that this copy belonged to the Admor, R. Nahum Dov Baer Friedman of Sadgora. One stamp has the name, Nahum Dov Baer Friedman in Hebrew letters and the name Freidman in Latin letters with a lion in the center. The second stamp says “מנחת שי”. The Admor inscribed and/or stamped all his books with a two word ownership origination phrase. R. Menahem Nahum Dov Baer Friedman of Ruhyzn-Sadgora (1844-1883) was famous for his library. R. Nahum, son of R. Shalom Joseph, was a bibliophile and when Hasidim would come to his father they would bring the rebbe, and often R. Nahum, books, both new and rare editions. He thus accumulated one of the largest private libraries in Eastern Europe. These books were stamped with the R. Nahum’s stamp, indicating that they were part of his library and how they came into his possession, whether as an acquisition, inheritance, or gift. At one point the library totaled more than 4,000 volumes, often beautifully bound and fully cataloged. Eventually a quarter of the library was sold to the Jewish library of Vienna, those books being described in the catalog Minhat Shelomoh (Venice, 1912). Other books were sold at auction in London. From the two stamps on the title page it is clear that Shemesh Zedakah belonged to R. Nahum and that it came into the collection by gift.

Detail Description

Only edition of these novellae on the Shulhan Arukh Yoreh De’ah by R. Moses ben Abraham me-Geza Zevi. Brought to press by the author’s grandson, the title page states that R. Moses was av bet din and rosh mesivta in Horodna (Grodno) in Lita. The contents are novellae on the pilpulim in the poskim, earlier and later (rishonim and ahronim). Tiferet le-Moshe, along with other works by the author, written more than a hundred years ago, were by this grandson. Because of the difficulties of the time it was not possible to publish them until now, when they are being brought to press to benefit the public. The book has been entitled Tiferet le-Moshe because that title includes the writer’s name Solomon (Shelomo, by inverting the letters of Moshe) “and the glory (tiferet) of children are their fathers” (Proverbs 17:6). There are approbations from R. Zevi Hirsch Levin, R. Ezekiel Segal Landau, and R. Raphael Kohen, followed by the introduction by R. Solomon ben Hayyim, the grandson. The text begins with hilkhot shehitah and concludes with hilkhot aveilot. At the end are eulogies.
