Translations of biblical words from Hebrew into Italian with some grammatical rules by R. Leone (Judah Aryeh) Modena. Galut Yehudah is organized as a complete program to make students proficient so that they can read and understand the Bible. The title page has Hebrew text and below it Italian text. The title, Galut Yehudah (Exiles of Judah, Jeremiah 24:5, 28:4, 29:22) can be understood in either of two ways, as a personal statement, referring to R. Modena’s exile from Venice to Ferrara and Florence, at which time he began to work on this book, or as referring to the general Jewish condition, in exile, a situation that has caused them, as he observes in the introduction, to forget the Hebrew language. Many initial words have decorative first letters. There are Italian and Hebrew introductions, rules of grammar, and the text, which, reading from left to right, explains important words. Galut Yehudah follows the order of the Bible, and concludes with the Pesah haggadah, Pirkei Avot, and a translation of terms. Also included are portions of prayers. R. Modena writes in his diary, concerning Galut Yehudah, that it is selling for ten lires although originally valued at three because not even one copy remains. It was, as a result, republished in his lifetime. The publisher of this edition was Giacomo Sorzino, author of Sefer ha-Nikkur (1595). When the Christian-Hebraist, Bishop Jean Plantavit De La Pause, (Plantavitius; 1576–1651), who had earlier beena student of R. Modena, was preparing his monumental Thesaurus synonymicus Hebraico-Chaldaico-Rabbinicus (Lodeve, 1644–45), Galut Yehudah was one of the titles sent to him by R. Modena. R. Judah Aryeh (Leone) Modena (1571–1648), Italian rabbi, scholar, and writer, is one of, if not the most fascinating Jewish personality of the Italian Renaissance. He was a child prodigy in both Jewish religious studies and music, becoming a scholar of stupendous productivity and a famous rabbi of the Venetian community. A prolific writer, He was the author of many books, in Hebrew and Italian, and his fame spread far beyond Venice.
