Detail Description

Commentaries and homilies on the Torah by R. Judah ben Joseph Perez, with additional homilies by his relative and predecessor, R. Isaac Cavallero. The title page has a decorative frame with an eagle holding a sword in each of its talons (and previous owner' s signature). There is an introduction form R. Perez and the text, which is in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. The text, organized by parsha, is in two parts, Nahal Etan, the homilies of R. Cavallero, and Perah Levanon, the discourses of R. Perez. Each are indicated by their respective names enclosed in a border comprised of decorative florets. In his commentary, which is primarily peshat, R. Perez not only brings traditional sources, showing his great erudition, but also quotes contemporary rabbis.

R. Judah ben Joseph Perez, descended from a Castilian family, served as rabbi and preacher at Venice and Amsterdam in the first half of the eighteenth century. He lived for an entire winter at Prague as the beneficiary of the primate of the community, R. Samuel Tausk, and at Kolin, where the rabbi, Baruch Austerlitz, befriended him. Among R. Perez's other works are Seder Keri'ei Mo'ed (Venice, 1706), a kabbalistic ritual text for the festivals; Sha'arei Rahamim (Venice, 1710), kabbalistic liturgies compiled from various works; Aseret ha-Devarim (Amsterdam, 1737), containing a commentary on Exodus 19-20, poetical paraphrases in Aramaic and Arabic, and hymns in honor of Simeon bar Yohai; and Fundamento Solido (Amsterdam, 1729), a compendium of the Jewish religion in Spanish, in twelve chapters on the fundamental principles of Judaism, legislation, and the Ten Commandments, the thirteen articles of faith, repentance, and penance. R. Perez also edited Divrei Yosef (Venice, 1715), the responsa of R. Joseph ben Mordecai ha-Kohen of Jerusalem. In the Nehemiah Hayon controversy he was suspected of being a Shabbatean since he was Hayon's scribe for some time and possibly also his disciple. He accompanied Hayon on his journey to Berlin. One of Abraham Michael Cardoso's pamphlets Megalleh Amukkot minni Hoshekh, was erroneously attributed to R. Perez.
