Detail Description

Two independent varied works, but both concerned with measures Darkhe Horaʼah by R.. Jonathon ben Mordeai Elliasberg, the second Erekh Milin by R. Hayyim Jacob Scheftel. The first book is Darkhe Hora’ah, a work of teaching methods that encompasses times, clarification of measurements, clarification of things that are estimated in quantity and place and time for their details; sufficiency and decisions in the way of instruction in general and in particular, comments and enlightenments. A detailed but clear and readable work on complex subjects. The second work, Erekh Milin is, as the title-page states, a detailed work on all forms of measures in the written and in the oral Torah, addressing measures, weights, and times, arranged alphabetically. There is an introduction from his son-in-law R. Abraham Kahana, and an approbation from R. Hqayyin Berlin, then a detailed table of contents, a listing of sources entitled Kiryat sefer, and the text.  After the text are additional data and corrections. Erekh Milin is an unusually detailed work on the subject of measures, and given its comprehensiveness is an unusually valuables work on the subject.

R. Jonathon ben Mordeai Elliasber  (1851–1898) was born in Kovno, Lithuania, and served as rabbi of Pumpian, Mariampol, and from 1886 until his death, of Volkovysk, Grodno district. His Torah novellae and ethical writings were published as a supplement to his father's Terumat Yad and his Darkhei Hora'ah was published independently (1884). In common with his father, he was one of the first rabbis to join the Ḥovevei Zion movement. R. Eliasberg strove to maintain harmony between the Orthodox and the progressive groups within the national movement, calling upon both sides "to be tolerant and patient with conflicting views." In 1893 he approached Aḥad Ha-Am in connection with his essay "Torah she-ba-Lev," which had aroused the anger of the Orthodox. (The author replied to the charges in his essay "Divrei Shalom.") His Zionist articles were published in Shivat Ẓiyyon (ed. by A.J. Slutski, 1900). After the first Zionist Congress, he joined the Zionist Organization.
