Detail Description

Only edition of these halakhic novellae on Shulhan Arukh Yoreh De’ah by R. David ben Kalman ha-Kohen Bistritz. The title page describes bet David as being part one (it was actually preceded by part two, 1911) on Shulhan Arukh Yoreh De’ah siman 1 through 112, clarifying and resolving well all the laws and positions from the works of rishonim (early sages) and ahronim (later sages) and the deliberations in their words and pilpul and reasoning, with novellae, sharp, pleasant, and sweet, for all occupied in Torah to rejoice in it. Bet David is being printed for the first time from a manuscript left over by the author’s son, R. David Katz Bistritz. The title page is followed by an introduction from Kalonymous Ze’ev, R. Bistritz’s son. Next are approbations from R. Shalom Mordecai ha-Kohen Schwadron, R. Meir ha-Kohen Rappaport, R. Koppel ben Exekiel Reich, R. Joseph Leib Sofer, and R. Mordecai Fried and then the text in two columns in rabbinic type.

R. David ben Kalman ha-Kohn Bistritz (Bistritts, d. 1862) served as av bet din in Micheldorf, Hungary. Yoreh De'ah is a section of the Shulhan that treats all aspects of Jewish law not pertinent to the Hebrew calendar, finance, torts, marriage, divorce, or sexual conduct. (Nevertheless there exists occasional overlap into the excluded areas). Yoreh De'ah is therefore the most diversified area of Jewish law. Initially based on Rabbi Jacob ben Asher's compilation of halakha (Jewish law), the Arba'ah Turim it was later the basis of , Rabbi Joseph Karo’s own compilation of practical Jewish law, the Shulhan Arukh after the Arba'ah Turim. Many later commentators used this framework, as well. Thus, Yoreh De'ah in common usage may refer to an area of halakha, non-specific to Rabbi Jacob ben Asher's compilation. Topics include, but are not limited to: Permitted and forbidden foods, Circumcision, Gentiles, Foreign worship, Prohibition against charging interest, Oaths, Converts, Honoring parents, Honoring scholars and the elderly, Charity, Torah study, Torah scrolls, Mezuzah scrolls, Sending away the mother bird to take the young, Eating new grain, Forbidden mixtures, (such as Shatnez), Redeeming the firstborn, Excommunication, Visiting the sick, Mourning, Priestly tithes, and the Prohibition against Tattooing.
