First edition, 2, 58 ff., quarto 192:135 mm., light age and damp staining, nice margins. A very good copy bound in recent cloth over boards.

Printed during the times of the Cossack riots in 1648 (Gzerot tach v’tat), which greatly impacted the mood of the Jewish nation and preceded the Sabbatean movement.

 

Detail Description

Maggid Mesharim by R. Joseph Caro, author of the Shulhan Arukh. Organized by the weekly parashat, it records R. Caro’s nightly visitations by a heavenly mentor ("maggid") who revealed to him kabbalistic doctrines, as well as rules and predictions for his private ascetic life. This heavenly mentor (Maggid) identified himself as the heavenly archetype of the Mishnah and the Shekhinah, and manifested himself in the form of “automatic speech,” i.e., as a voice coming out of Caro's mouth which could be heard by others. The best-known account of this phenomenon is that contained in a letter by Solomon Alkabeẓ, recounting such a “maggidic” manifestation during a Shavuot-night vigil in R. Caro’s house, probably in Nikopolis. These visitations, which continued for about 50 years, were not experienced in a state of trance, for R. Caro subsequently remembered the messages and wrote them down in a kind of mystical diary, subsequently printed under the title Maggid Mesharim.

The publisher mentioned on the title page is Elisha Ashkenazi, father of Natan Ha’azati, one of the most prominent advocates of Shabtai Tzvi in the Sabbatean era.

בשער: שנת ה’ש’ק’ט’ [לפ"ג: ת"ט]. קביעת התאריך לפ"ג על פי הפרט בסוף "הקדמת המגיהים" (דף [2, א]): שנת מחצית השקל בשקל ה’ק’ד’ש’ תרומה לה’ [ת"ט]. פרט זה נמצא רק בחלק מן הטפסים של הספר, ונשמט מרוב הטפסים.

דף א-יב,א: "הזהרות ותיקונים וסייגים" (בהוצאות הבאות נדפסו האזהרות בראש הספר). כוללים גם הוספות לפרשיות: בראשית, ויצא, מקץ, ויגש, שמות, בא, ויקהל. ההוספה לפ’ שמות כבר נדפסה בחלק א. בהוצאות הבאות נקראו הוספות אלו "מהדורא בתרא" ושולבו במקומם.

קולופון: "ותשלם המלאכ’... ביום טו"ב לחדש אלול ובו ביום התחלנו... ספר זהרי חמה" לר’ אברהם אזולאי, ויניציאה ת"י.

ב"הקדמת המגיהים" חותמים ר’ יצחק בינגא ור’ אלישע חיים "תושב ירושלם", אולם ההקדמה נכתבה על ידי בינגא.

הוא כותב: "אמר יצחק... אל נחמות הופיע... בזכותו אותי להוציא על ידי מחצית ספר מגיד משרים [חלק א]... אז נשאתי את עיני... לגמור את המצוה... הקרה נא אל לפני את... ר’ אלישע חיים... אשר נמצא אתו... הספר נאה ומתוקן... נתוועדנו יחד להוציאו". בהסכמה: "והחלק הנשא’ [חלק ב] לא נמצ’ בידו [של ר’ יצחק בינגא] כי היה בצפת".
