Detailed Description:

Novellae to the tractates Pesahim, Hullin, and Bava Batra. The first part, Hiddushei Halakhot, summarizes each topic on the basis of the Talmud and its commentaries, and the second, Hiddushei Posekim, deals with halakhic rulings which derive from these sources.

R. Abraham b. Saul Broda (d. 1717), was born in Bunzlau (Bohemia) and was sent by his father to Cracow to pursue his Talmudic studies with R. Isaac b. Zev Harif of that city, in order to withdraw him from the evil influences of Shabbethaism, at that time spreading throughout Bohemia. After receiving his rabbinical diploma, R. Broda returned to his native city, but was soon called as rabbi to Lichtenstadt, and thence to Raudnitz. Even then his reputation was so great that R. Shabbethai Bass asked for his approbation to a book that R. Bass had written. Hence, when the office of chief rabbi of Prague became vacant about 1693, it was offered to R. Broda, who accepted it, although it was probably not very remunerative in consequence of the great fire of 1689, which impoverished many members of the congregation. This office, from which he had doubtless expected much pleasure, involved him, on the contrary, in many difficulties; for when a difference arose between R. Broda and R. Zevi Ashkenazi in regard to a ritual question, all the rabbis of Prague took sides against the former. It was probably this that induced R. Broda, who disliked quarrels, to seek another position. He was called to Metz. In 1709 he was appointed rabbi of Metz, and in 1713 of Frankfort, where he remained until his death. In these last two cities he established yeshivot which attracted many students. In his approbation to Eshel Avraham, R. Jonathan Eybeschuetz paid tribute to R. Broda's contribution to education and teaching: "He was remarkably successful in learning, teaching, and disseminating Torah, and most contemporary scholars of renown were his disciples. Among his outstanding students were R. Nethanel Weil, R. Jonah Landsofer, and R. Samuel Helman of Metz. His novellae were noted by his students, who quoted them in their works, or published them together with their own works. R. Broda's most important work is Eshel Avraham (1747), reveals his erudition, keen intellect, and methodical treatment of the subject matter. Other works by R. Broda are Hiddushei Ge'onim (Offenbach, 1723), on Bava Kamma, Bava Mezia, and Sanhedrin; Hiddushei Hilkhot Gittin (Wandsbeck, 1731), published by his disciple, R. Jonathan b. Isaac ha-Levi; Shema'ta Hadta (Frankfort, 1737), novellae and explanations on Ketubbot and the second chapter of Gittin, and Toledot Avraham (Fuerth, 1769), novellae to Kiddushin and Ketubbot (incomplete). R. Israel Isserl b. Isaac ha-Levi (beginning of 18th century), a disciple of Broda, published Asefat Hakhamim (1722), which included novellae by Broda. In a takkanah of 1715, Broda deals with the question of modesty, warns against extravagant festivities, and pleads for abstention from extravagance and forbidden foods.
