Detail Description

Two works, Tov Ro’i by R. Jacob Weil and Migdol David by R. David Gruenhut, printed and published together by R. Gruenhut. There is an introduction to both titles by R. Gruenhut followed by Tov Ro’i. This work, printed in the form of responsa, is R. Jacob ben Judah Weil’s (d. c.1456) work on shehitah, the laws of ritual slaughter. The text is in two columns in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. R. Weil was a student of R. Jacob Moellin (Maharil), and served as rabbi in Nuremberg, Augsburg, Bamberg, and from 1444, Erfurt. R. Moellin, who ordained R. Weil, authorized him to serve as rabbi (or establish a yeshivah) in Nuremberg, but R. Weil initially abstained in order to not offend R. Zalman Katz who had preceded him in this capacity. At a later date R. Weil did officiate in both capacities there, apparently harmoniously with R. Katz. R. Weil was widely recognized as a leading halakhic authority, so that queries were submitted to him from respected scholars, for example, R. Israel Isserlein (Terumat ha-Deshen), and from distant locations. R. Weil’s Hilkhot Shehitah u-Vedikah is an important work on the subject and has been the subject of commentaries.

Migdol David is homilies on Genesis by R. David ben Nathan Gruenhut (17th–18th centuries). It is set in a single column in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words, which are in square type. The text, according to the title page, is according to the order of the Torah, Mishnah, Talmud, Rashi, Tosafot, and Midrash Aggadah. R. Gruenhut was a German talmudist and kabbalist. In 1682, he printed R. Hayyim Vital's Sefer ha-Gilgulim, but was prevented from distributing it by the rabbinate of Frankfort, which opposed kabbalistic works because of the danger of Shabbateanism. Two years later, however, while at Heimerdingen, he published it again, this time through a Christian printer in Frankfort. After serving as rabbi for several years in neighboring towns (Idstein, Aue, and perhaps also Heimerdingen), he returned to Frankfort, becoming one of the scholars in the bet ha-midrash founded by R. David Oppenheim. R. Gruenhut also published the Sefer Hasidim of R. Judah he-Hasid with his own commentary (Frankfort, 1712) and in the following year R. Samuel Uceda’s Midrash Shemu’el (Frankfort, 1713). On friendly terms with Eisenmenger and Schudt before they published their anti-Semitic works, he wrote an adulatory preface to the former's edition of the Bible. At the end of the volume are R. Gruenhut’s novellae on Megillah, with new foliation but still under the title Migdol David.
