Physical Description

Two parts in four volumes, see Hebrew description below for precise pagination, folio, 365:265 mm., usual light age and damp staining, candle wax and wine stains on some ff., wide margins, old Italian rabbinic script in margins of v.4, printed upon thick and high-quality paper with very wide margins. A very good set bound in matching half cloth over boards.

The Yom Kippur liturgies are framed with the Asti Rite, in neat Italian Rabbinic Script, manuscript in the margins. The Asti Rite wasn't printed until the 19th century - 200 years after this manuscript. Commonly referred to as the Apam Rite, for the three areas it was used in Asti, Fossano and Moncalvo. The rite originated in northern French and was used in England until the expulsion of 1290 and died in France with the persecutions of the 13-14 centuries. It was also used by three communities in Piedmont (northern Italy): Asti, Fossano and Moncalva, and it is accordingly called Nussah APaM. There, it was still employed during High Holy Day services until modern times.

Detail Description

In addition to the liturgy for the entire year according to the Ashkenazic rite, this sumptuous and extraordinarily large Mahzor contains the commentary Hadrath Kodesh by Isaac Segal of Herlisheim. An introduction by Isaac Pacifico contains much important information on contemporary Italian Jewish history. Though it was designed primarily to address the needs of the Ashkenazic communities of Italy, the ambitious project was nevertheless subscribed to in advance by all three Venetian congregations (Ashkenazic, Sephardic and Italian) as well as by the communities of Padua, Rovigo, Verona, Mantua , Casale Monferrato, Gorizia, and their environs.

The publishers Joseph and Jacob Hai Kohen, having received the approbation of the Venice rabbinate, traveled from city to city seeking subscriptions and soliciting the financial aid of the wealthy "for the expenditure is great." To protect the rights of the publishers, the rabbinate forbade the publication of any other edition for twelve years.

Originally published in two parts, the sheer bulk of the complete mahzor prompted the owners of many sets to later rebind them in three or even four volumes, the latter being the case in the present lot.
