Detailed Description

Only edition of these novellae on tractates in Seder Kodashim by R. Elijah Zyk Shidlov (Schidlow). Puplished posthumously, the title page states that R. Shidlov was occupied all his days with Seder Kodashim and did not slumber regularly until he was familiar with all Seder Kodashim, with Torat Kohanim and korban Aaron, as well as all the applicable commentaries and textual variances. “Saying, Who will show us good” (Psalms 4:7)? And there is no good but Torah. His purpose was to achieve greatness but Torah. Ateret Elyah is on three tractates, Zevahim, Menahot, and Temurah, and on the Tosefta. Unfortunately, his work on other tractates was lost. The title page also includes the disclaimer that references to terms such as akum or A. Z. refer to earlier peoples and not to contemporary gentiles for whose well being we pray. It is dated with the verse, “And he took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him” (II Kings 2:14). There are approbations from ten prominent rabbis and an introduction from R. Shidlov’s son who relates in detail that his father was among the sages of Vienna who learned day and night and frequently ensured self-mortification. The text follows in two columns, in rabbinic type, excepting headers and initial words. At the end of the novellae on Zevahim there is an attractive tail-piece of the patriarch Abraham feeding the three angels with the matriarch Sarah looking out from the tent (Genesis 1-18).
