Detail Description

R. Shalom Daniel Yehuda b. Moshe haKohen (1835-1926) was born in the city of Djerba (Tunisia). From childhood he concentrated on Torah study. After his marriage he engaged in trade and became known as a man of grace, good deeds and generosity. He soon lost all his possessions and devoted all his time to Torah study. After 10 years of marriage at the age of 40 his son was born, and despite his dire financial situation he returned home every morning, noon and evening to teach him and then returned to the market to find a livelihood.

In 5652 (1892), he began serving as the first rabbi and community counselor in the city of Zarzis (Tunisia) for over 30 years. He was known for his wisdom and a rabbi whose blessings are being fulfilled. The Muslims also came to receive his blessing and advice.

His daughter (Sarah) fell ill as a child and lost the light of her eyes. After praying to G-d to send her complete healing, a man who she did not know arrived that night in a dream, put his hand over her eyes and said to her, 'Do not be afraid, tomorrow your eyes will shine as the rest of the healthy'. When she woke up in the morning she began to see again and until the end of her life [close to the age of 90] never lost her vision.

In his old age he finished writing his book "Chaim VeShalom" [Life and Peace] and asked his son to translate it into Arabic. The translation, Divrei Shalom, is printed in the book alongside the Hebrew.

In 5684 (1924), he immigrated to Israel where he encountered many difficulties and even thought of returning to Tunisia. However, with the kind help of R. Shlomo Tajir, Chief Rabbi of Beirut, he settled in Tiberias where he remained till his passing.
