Detail Description

Only edition of these novellae on numerous tractates by R. Abraham Aryeh Leib ben Shalom Zalman Kahana. The title-page has a border comprised of verses and informs that it was published posthumously by his son R. Shalom Zalman Kahana. The verso of the title-page and the following page have a large number of approbations, and then his son’s introduction. The text follows, beginning with Berakhot and covers tractates Seders Zera’im, Mo’ed, Nashim, and Kodashim. Below the text of Or ha-Neʻerav is the commentary Divrei Shelomo by R. Shalom Zalman Kahana. At the end of the volume, with its own title-page is the extensive index of Or ha-Neʻerav.

R. Abraham Aryeh Leib ben Shalom Zalman Kahana (also called Loeb Scheines; d. 1788), was a noted rabbi and author. Born in Horodenka, Galicia, where his father was rabbi, R. Kahana is not to be confused with his great-uncle, Abraham ben Shalom Shakhna Kahana, who was rabbi in Brody, Ostrog, and Dubno. R. Kahana himself was rabbi in Berdichev and Polonnoye (south Russia). He wrote novellae to the first three and to the fifth orders of the Babylonian Talmud under the title Or ha-Ne'erav, which was published with annotations, Divrei Shelomo, by his son Solomon Zalman (Ostrog, 1824). His homilies and a Bible commentary entitled Divrei Ḥemed and Zer Zahav, respectively, remain unpublished.
